Building Bridges in Music: A Conversation with Jake Connolly of Connolly Music Group
At Heid Music, we’re always looking to spotlight the people and partnerships that help shape the music industry from the inside out. In this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jake Connolly: President of Connolly Music Group, NAMM Board Member, and a passionate advocate for music education and innovation.
From his family’s legacy in the orchestral string world to pioneering new tools for music retailers and educators, Jake brings a thoughtful, forward-thinking perspective to the table.
A Legacy of Strings and Service
Connolly Music Group has been a cornerstone in the orchestral music world since 1970. Originally an importer and master distributor, the company evolved into a direct distributor, working closely with retailers like Heid Music.
“We’ve always been focused on the orchestral space,” Jake shared. “From Thomastik-Infeld strings to Revelle bows and instruments, and accessories like Boveda and Blustream, we aim to support every part of the string player’s journey.”
Jake emphasized the importance of learning from retail partners. “We’re learning more from Heid Music than you might think. It’s a true partnership.”
Family Roots, Industry Relationships
Both Connolly and Heid Music are family-owned businesses, and that shared foundation shapes how they build relationships.
Jake reflected on working with his father: “We only overlapped for about three years, but he was brilliant in how he passed the torch. He set a clear exit date and gave me space to lead, while sharing everything he could.”
That experience instilled a customer-first philosophy: “Let the customer tell you what’s right. Their needs are always evolving, and we have to keep listening.”
Beyond the Transaction: Building Musical Journeys
Jake and I discussed how the industry is moving beyond simple transactions. “It’s not just about selling a product,” he said. “It’s about how that product reaches the musician and supports their journey.”
One example is Connolly’s partnership with Blustream, a customer engagement platform that helps retailers like Heid Music guide customers after a purchase. Whether it’s a video on how to rosin a bow or tips for tuning a violin, Blustream delivers timely, relevant content directly to the musician’s phone.
“It’s about meeting people where they are,” Jake explained. “Especially for young musicians and their parents, who might not know what they need until they need it.”
Empowering Educators and Students
Blustream isn’t just for customers—it’s a tool for educators, too. By providing students with resources outside the classroom, teachers can focus on what they do best.
“Retention is everything,” Jake said. “If students stay engaged, programs stay strong. And when programs thrive, music education grows.”
Early results are promising: retailers using Blustream have seen a 10–15% increase in student retention. “That’s more kids staying in music year after year,” Jake noted. “That’s powerful.”
Learning Never Stops
Jake’s passion for music isn’t just professional—it’s personal. On his 20th anniversary with Connolly, he decided to pick up the violin. “I wanted to understand what it’s like to learn an instrument as an adult,” he said. “It was humbling—and amazing.”
Eventually, he transitioned to guitar, where he’s found joy in the process. “Practice time is now my escape. I’m still a beginner, but I love it.”
The Bigger Picture
As we wrapped up, Jake shared a message for educators, retailers, and anyone passionate about music:
“There are so many distractions today. Music takes dedication, but the rewards are worth it. We all need to work together—retailers, distributors, teachers—to make that journey as rewarding as possible.”
Final Thoughts
Jake Connolly’s story is a reminder that the music industry is about more than instruments—it’s about people, partnerships, and purpose. Whether it’s through innovative tools like Blustream or simply listening to the needs of a young musician, Connolly Music Group is helping shape a more connected, supportive future for music makers everywhere.
