The Sound City 120 is a commanding all-tube amplifier head born from the golden age of British rock. Designed in the late 1960s and built into the 1970s, the L/B 120 Mark IV delivers up to 120 watts RMS of touch-sensitive tone, driven by six EL34 power tubes and a unique preamp architecture developed by legendary British amp designers Dave Reeves and Dennis Cornell.
This vintage amplifier reflects Sound City’s mission to deliver professional-grade performance at an accessible price. Though often found alongside more well-known names like Marshall and Hiwatt, the Sound City 120 distinguished itself with bold tonal flexibility and serious volume. Each EQ control—Bass, Middle, Treble—is active and gain-driven, shaped by individual ECC83 preamp tube stages rather than the typical passive tone stack, giving players precise command over each frequency band.
The amp features two channels—Normal and Brilliant—each with its own Volume control, with a shared Presence control in the output stage to adjust the high-end contour. With a solid-state rectifier and a rugged design, this model was made to perform reliably at high volumes.
A serious piece of gear for players who appreciate vintage character and pure tube-driven power, the Sound City 120 pairs beautifully with 4x12" cabinets and rewards dynamic playing with a wide palette of textures—from crystalline cleans to roaring saturation.
