Sound Innovations for Concert Band Book 1 (Second Edition) – B-flat Clarinet

Sound Innovations for Concert Band, Book 1, Second Edition is a comprehensive method book designed to help beginning bass clarinet players build strong musical foundations through a carefully sequenced progression of skills. Developed with input from thousands of teachers, this method features clean, easy-to-follow page layouts, clear goals for each exercise, reinforcement of new concepts, performance opportunities, diverse musical styles, and innovative teaching and practice resources.

Note names are intentionally omitted from note heads to encourage faster development of musical literacy. The starting pitch is concert D, providing accessible ranges and fingerings for beginning band students. The book is organized into six short levels, with benchmarks, assessment indicators, and intermediate goals that help teachers and students monitor progress throughout the learning process.

Structured Learning for Beginning Bass Clarinet Players

The method introduces new skills at a thoughtful pace while providing consistent reinforcement, technique development, and opportunities for students to apply what they have learned. Clear objectives and progressive exercises help beginning bass clarinet players develop confidence from their first notes while building the fundamental skills needed for successful participation in a concert band program.

Flexible Resources for Teachers and Students

Every book includes free access to SI Online, providing supplemental worksheets, practice tracks, alternate tunes, additional full concert band pieces, instrument-specific instructional videos, and more, with no login required. Accompaniment tracks can be slowed down, sped up, and looped to help students work through challenging passages at their own pace.

Online Practice and Assessment Tools

SI Online resources include music theory, music history, scale exercises, chorales, rhythm pages, and other materials for classroom reinforcement, home practice, and differentiated instruction. These resources support students from their first notes through more advanced playing while giving teachers flexibility to adapt instruction to the needs of their ensemble.

Book 1, Second Edition is also available for free in MakeMusic Cloud, an interactive practice platform designed to engage students and streamline assessment. With a paid subscription, students can additionally access SI CenterStage, featuring popular melodies including Disney and pop tunes for all instruments.
