A prominent figure in Baroque music, Henry Purcell greatly influenced the music of Great Britain and gave it a distinct sound different than that of the music being composed by his contemporaries in France and Germany. Perhaps best known for his work as a composer of theatrical music, Purcell also composed sacred music for churches as well as settings of religious texts by poets of the time. Some of these pieces were later featured in Joseph Funk’s “Harmonia Sacra”, an Appalachian hymnbook of collected sacred songs by different composers that was commonly used in the 19th and 20th centuries in that part of the United States. This collection from International Music offers singers 4 of these songs by Purcell, such as “Evening Song”.
