Keys to Buying
Good used pianos are very hard to find. Heid Music is extremely selective in the used pianos we purchase. There are many concerns when purchasing a used piano from a private party:

  • Sounding Board – Cracked or loss of crown (diminishing tone, quality of sound).
  • Tuning Pins – Loose tune pins, loss of torque (tuning will not hold).
  • Strings – Unwound bass strings (decrease of volume of bass section).
  • Bridge – Cracked or split (buzzing where strings are affected).
  • Pin Block – Concealed split in pin block (tuning virtually impossible).
  • Action – Worn or misused, difficult to regulate, hammers striking strings improperly (poor playing response).
  • Hammers – Worn out, matted, susceptible to moths (shallow tone and uneven tone).
  • Warranty – None (labor and parts responsibility of owner).

Any of the above problems mean costly repairs, or worse, an unplayable piano.

Heid Music generates its own stock of used instruments through loans to educational institutions and other businesses as well as demonstration models and trade-ins. These instruments are always in their best condition and come at a considerable value. When you purchase a used piano from Heid Music you will receive a 90 day warranty. Depending on the situation, we will purchase pianos from private parties only after they pass Heid's thorough inspection. Unless otherwise specified, all used pianos include a piano bench and tuning. If you have any questions concerning our USED PIANOS, email us or give us a call at one of our three locations.

APPRAISING YOUR USED PIANO
Heid Music is pleased to offer you free general estimates over the telephone with the following information:

  • Name of manufacturer on the fallboard
  • Serial # (Look inside the lid. It will be a series of 4-10 numbers)
  • Height of piano in inches for verticals and length from front of keys to end of cabinet for grands.

For a more detailed assessment, we are happy to come to your home to review your instrument. This will incur a small fee which can be applied towards the purchase price of the piano, should we choose to buy it.

For a technical analysis, please contact one of the independent technicians. Fee will vary by individuals.
