July Teacher Spotlight

Stephanie Zinkel-Heid Music Green Bay

szinkelTell us about your studio.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. I taught music in the schools to K - grade 8. Currently, I am Director of Music for a church in DePere and teaching approximately 27 students/week with room for more. My students are provided with many opportunities to perform throughout the year. Besides the traditional, formal recital held each year in May, students can play at the mall during Halloween (in costume if they choose) and play Christmas songs during the Christmas season at a local store to provide holiday music for shoppers. I also provide competition opportunities for my students.

What is your favorite part about teaching?
My favorite part about teaching piano is that I have the students one to one. This provides me with an opportunity to really get to know them. I enjoy watching the children grow and they share many of their joys with me. Recently I had a student graduate from high school who I have had as a student since he was five years old. At one of his last lessons, we went back over his piano notebook remembering all of the funny things that had happened over the past 13 years. It was quite fun.

What is the best tip you can offer a beginning music student?
A piece of advice I give all of my beginning students is that playing piano (or any instrument) is not as easy as it looks. If that were the case, then everyone would play piano. Whenever you get frustrated or things seem to be getting tough, just keep playing. The improvement may feel minimal, but as they start to look back over the years they will see just how much they accomplised. I remind them that it will all be worth it in the end.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have four children at home, so my spare time is all taken up with them. I can often be found at gymnastics competitions, soccer games, tae kwon do tournaments, or any other activity depending on the time of year. In the few minutes I have to myself, I read a book and enjoy the quiet. As far my favorite genre of music, I enjoy playing and listening to all kinds. One thing I always encourage my students to do is to tell me if there is something they really want to play. I am always willing to help them learn their favorite pop hit, movie theme, or musical. I don't want to dictate everything they play. I encourage them to try all kinds of music, but we will always work on something of their choosing that they are familiar with and is fun for them to play.
