How did you come to decide that you wanted to teach music?
I'll be honest and say that I started out wanting to be a performer, not a teacher. But I knew that teaching would be part of my professional career, so I took some music education classes in college. After graduate school, I decided to take on a few students. My very first lesson was for a 5-year-old girl named Allie, and it was the most fun I'd ever had in my entire life! I was just giggling the rest of the day. That's when I knew teaching music was going to be a big part of my life. Since then, music has been as much a creative outlet for me as performing and composing.
What makes you a great teacher?
I feel like I'm nothing compared to my students. They always amaze me! They do such great work, and it makes me want to do an even better job teaching them. When they see how happy it makes me, they want to practice even more!
What is the best tip you can offer to a beginning student?
Relax. Have fun. Be prepared for some challenges and even some frustration, but that's only temporary. Keep going -- there's magic waiting for you on the other side!
If you had the time to dedicate to it, what instrument would you master next?
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like playing games and doing other fun things with my family.
Tell us something unique about you.
I play in a rock band AND I'm a classical music critic. I think that's funny!
