Fox Valley Memory Project named as beneficiary for
Heid Music’s annual Doctors in Recital
Appleton, Wis. (June 25, 2015) – Heid Music is proud to announce the beneficiary for their annual concert performance of Doctors in Recital: Fox Valley Memory Project. The Fox Valley Memory Project was selected based on their mission to serve all persons with dementia, from those who have just received a dementia diagnosis to persons who have had to move into a long-term care facility.
“The Fox Valley Memory Project is honored to have been chosen as the recipient of funds raised this year from the Doctors in Recital concert,” says Susan McFadden, Professor Emerita in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and research consultant for the Fox Valley Memory Project.
Doctors in Recital is an annual event in its sixth year in the Fox Valley. The concert boasts accomplished doctor-performers as they come together to raise awareness and funding for the selected non-profit organization. The concert, held at Jane Bergstrom Fine Arts Education Center at St. Mary Central High School in Neenah, is presented by Heid Music and Steinway and Sons.
“We’ve been proud to present Doctors in Recital for many years and watch our talented doctors shine on stage,” says Todd Heid, president and 3rd generation owner of Heid Music.
This year, the event will raise funds and awareness for the Fox Valley Memory Project, a local organization dedicated to easing the fear and isolation associated with dementia and to increasing access to the resources people need to live well with dementia. Their mission is to collaborate with other organizations to offer programs and services that improve quality of life for persons with dementia, as well as their family care partners and friends. They encourage practices of hospitality and inclusion that make our community dementia-friendly.
''Music is especially important to our participants,” says McFadden “We often enjoy musical programs at our memory cafés.”
In fact, the organization recently secured a grant that supported training of long-term care staff in drumming methods and they held a concert open to the community at which residents demonstrated their enthusiasm and skill in drumming. At the same concert, the “On a Positive Chorus” entertained the audience with treasured songs from long ago.
The chorus consists of about 25 people who attend the memory cafés. In addition, the Fox Valley Memory Project was selected to conduct a pilot study of the national Music & MemorySM program in which persons with dementia are given iPod Shuffles loaded with their favorite music. This has been shown to have numerous positive effects for long-term care residents. The current study examines the responses of people still living at home.
Funding from Doctors in Recital will be pivotol in continuing these programs and services for people living with dementia in the Fox Valley. Tickets to the event can be purchased beginning in August online at foxvalleymemoryproject.org or at Heid Music's Appleton and Oshkosh locations (308 E College Ave.; 1750 W South Park Ave. respectively).
