Dr. Joyce first learned to play the piano from her mom at age six and started flute in high school band. She put her music aside until eight years ago, when her small church needed a keyboard player. She grew up in Manawa, WI. Wisconsin all the way! Joyce practices Family Medicine in Kimberly.
Dr. Kurt Bloomhuff took piano lessons growing up, but it was not until a couple of years ago that he decided to play the instrument he always dreamed of playing, the electric guitar. He and his wife joined a garage-type rock band with some friends and he taught himself to play the guitar. Kurt went to undergrad at Duke University and medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. He came to Neenah to practice Family Medicine with Obstetrics in 2001. Playing music and, subsequently hanging out with friends has been a good diversion and a lot of fun.
Dr. Suzanne Bloomhuff grew up playing classical piano and the upright bass. She began singing in college and medical school and three years ago joined a local rock band where she sings and plays the bass guitar. Suzie has been working in the Fox Valley since 2001 as a Family Practice physician who also delivers babies. She went to medical school at Wayne State University, where she met her husband. Dr. John Campbell is a retired Urologic Surgeon with the Affinity Health System. John attended University of Michigan for his undergraduate degree and Case Western Reserve University, medical school. His residency program was completed at Mayo Clinic. His interest in music came at an early age when he returned home from kindergarten and played Brahms Lullaby on an old upright piano. Piano lessons continued through the formative years and since retirement, he has studied jazz with Matt Turner, formerly with Lawrence University. John’s current focus is with jazz improvisations.
Dr. Bruce Danz graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1980. He started playing the clarinet in 4th grade and was taught by his parents. Bruce currently plays clarinet with the Little Chute Community Band.
Dr. Deidre Flanagan started the piano at age seven and continued lessons through high school. Since then she had only dabbled at the keyboard until her youngest son started lessons last year. In helping him with practice, she rediscovered the pleasure and the challenge of playing. She graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1994 and finished her surgery residency at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1999. She joined the Affinity Medical Group and has been practicing General and Vascular Surgery in Appleton ever since.
Dr. John Harris started out in music, and ended up in medicine as an OB-GYN for 32 years. He has been retired for the last 18 years. John attended University of Michigan for his medical school. Along the way, he fathered three beautiful red-haired daughters, who followed in his musical footsteps. Well, sometimes under protest, but they followed nonetheless. All took piano lessons and when they were adept, began to play duets with Dad. A tradition began! To entice us, he would plead, “just one.” Now, whenever they get together, unruly duets break out… OK Dad, just one! Today you will also hear from Susan and Ann.
Dr. Phyllis Lee's father purchased their family a Steinway model S baby grand in 1950. She didn’t play much during the decade of medical training at University of California, SF. After her father passed away she inherited the piano and discovered its incredible sound. “The piano makes you want to play,” Phyllis says. She practices Geriatric, Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine and has found that playing piano in nursing homes helps her communicate to patients, particularly ones with dementia. Currently she works in the internal medicine department at Aurora Medical in Oshkosh and often jokes that she took the job because there is a piano in the lobby that she can play while on call.
Dr. Cynthia Leigh got her medical degree from the University of Nebraska Health Sciences Center then did a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in Endocrinology at the University of Missouri. She has been practicing endocrinology in the Fox Valley since 1987. She came to the harp as an adult, inspired to take up the instrument while trying to be a good Suzuki parent for her children’s beginning harp lessons. The beauty and therapeutic effect of the harp led her on to private lessons of her own and continuing education at seminars and workshops. Cindy enjoys both lever and pedal harp.
Dr. Victoria Negrete has loved music since she was a young girl, playing the violin and singing in choirs and musicals. She attended Illinois Wesleyan University, where she was able to pursue music and biology. Susan is a Pediatrician in Oshkosh and has been practicing for 23 years.
Dr. Dilip Tannen was very fond of music since early childhood. After medical school, however music became a serious hobby. He went to medical school at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Nagpur University in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India and is a General Practitioner in Oshkosh.
Dr. Valerie Zapolsky received her love of music from her mother who is a wonderful soprano. Val’s mother also involved her in the Community Theatre. Val sang the Children’s March from Carmen (in French) before she knew what “French” was. She grew up with musicals, opera and choral society concerts. In college she was in Glee Club. Since then, however, Val has not performed much. She is really looking forward to singing girl group harmony with two fellow Pediatricians.
