Peter “Duke” (Papa) Heid, a musician and former radio repair parts salesman, founded Heid Music in 1948. During the debut year of the Company’s operation, Peter became an equal partner with Gerald “Buck” Jensen, who, like Peter, was also a musician and fellow veteran of the United States Army Band.
The original store location was in the 300 block of West College Avenue, in Appleton, which is now the site of the Paper Valley Hotel.
In late 1957, Heid Music moved to its present location at 308 E. College Avenue in Appleton. Until the mid-1960’s, this location sold televisions, stereos, tape recorders and records; and until the mid-1970’s, also sold home and church organs. After that, the Appleton location remained a “full line music retail store” to include: band & orchestra instrument sales, rentals and repair, guitars and guitar repair, amps, drums, acoustic & digital pianos, keyboards, print music & accessories for all instruments and an education center with group and private lessons.
Today, Heid Music has Appleton’s 18,000 sq ft location and locations in Green Bay (estbalished 1979), Wisconsin Rapids (1986), Oshkosh (2010) & Madison (2011). Our website, heidmusic.com, serves as an online information resource and allows our customers 24/7 shopping and ships anywhere in the world.
Heid Music is proud to continue our focus on music education and entertainment. Our goal is to bring music to our communities and to inspire and engage musicians at any stage, any age.
In 2015, Heid Music was named 2014 Print Music Dealer of the Year by AIMM vendor Hal Leonard. This honor comes from Heid Music's dedication to being a full-time music resource and continuing to support print music as a vital part of our portfolio. Heid Music is also a NAMM Top 100 Dealer, received a Music Excellence Award from Music Inc. Magazine, and was awarded Best of Madison Gold musical instrument store in the Madison area.
